Trees need to be pruned for a number of reasons including: safety and the health of the tree. Broken or dead branches can be dangerous if they fall without warning, even on a calm day! If a tree’s branches grow too big for the tree or is too close to your roof or chimney, they need to be pruned and cleared to prevent them from damaging your home.

In general, pruning a tree when it is dormant is recommended if there are large branches to remove; that is, pruning between the time the leaves fall from the tree in the fall and the time the buds swell in the spring. However, pruning for safety reasons or minor pruning may also be done in the summer.
